4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A PROFESSIONAL MC
I’ve been attending weddings since I was a little guy, mid to late 70’s and as far back as I can recall all the weddings I attended always had the presence of a professional wedding MC, well presented, charismatic, articulate and vibrant. I remember this because as a child I’d get embarrassed easy and I always feared my family would be seated at a table close to the dance floor, which meant you were in the firing line of the MC that night. You see back then a wedding MC was loud and overly interactive with the guests, poking fun or making them sing or god forbid as a child ask you a question you didn’t know the answer to. It was all in good fun, but the point I’m making is as an Australian with an Italian heritage this was the norm, you never asked a friend or family member to MC your weddings, you had a professional run the show and in most cases the wedding MC came with the function centre.

Nowadays depending on your cultural background most people still hire a professional wedding MC, but many people don’t and they leave the responsibility to a family member or friend. I understand in some cases it comes down to budget, but truth be told outside of the venue and priest/celebrant marrying you, securing your wedding MC should be next on the list, so here’s 4 reasons why you should hire a professional wedding MC:
1. Family & Friends Are There To Have Fun (not worry about messing up)
If you plan on getting married once in your life, then you want that celebration to be awesome! You want all those close and dear to you to have the best time possible, so why would you burden a family member or friend the responsibility of hosting the entire night? Controlling the guests, creating the total vibe, ensuring formalities run to time and more importantly speaking articulately so guests are captivated…sounds like a lot right? That’s because it is. You see your wedding celebration will only be as good as your MC. It’s like getting a friend to auction your 2 bedder Inner West apartment, sure you’ll save on Auctioneer fees, but will you be getting the best result?
2. Make Every Moment Count
A wedding celebration is made up of a collection of moments shared by the bride and groom and their guests throughout the evening, from introductions to speeches to cake cutting to the bridal waltz to farewells. If the atmosphere and flow of these moments isn’t established properly then the bride and groom and guests miss out on enjoying the true experience of the occasion, and you only get one shot. To give you an idea, before a bride and groom cut their wedding cake, I make them kiss, I remind them of the milestones ahead and say words that truly capture the moment, then their guests join me for 3 cheers and we toast to their love and they cut the cake. This is a moment, it’s achieved by timing, lighting, music at the right level, the physical placement of the bride and groom, and it all happens in under a minute. Like capturing the peak moment of a performance or conducting the crescendo of a symphony, you miss it and it’s gone.
3. It’s Once In A Lifetime
For most a wedding celebration happens once in our life, for others maybe 2 or 3 times, or more, but for the majority it really is a once in a lifetime milestone. As mentioned previously your wedding celebration will only be as good as your wedding MC and it’s not all about speaking on the microphone, from the running of the night, coordinating food service with the venue, organising the bride, groom and the bridal party for formalities, keeping vendors (photo, video & fireworks) in check. There’s so much that happens off the mic that is crucial to the success of your wedding celebration. So why leave anything to chance, put one of the most important days in your life in the hands of an experienced professional wedding MC.
4. Tips, Advice & Guidance
For an established wedding MC chances are they’ve been at the helm of hundreds, possibly thousands of weddings over the years, with that sort of experience comes a wealth of knowledge that a bride and groom can definitely benefit from. In my 22+ years of experience I’ve seen it all and I can tell you what works and what doesn’t, especially when it comes to the running schedule. The majority of weddings are pretty much the same with timings but on occasion tweaks need to be made and it’s those modifications that can add so much value to the flow of a wedding celebration.
There are definitely more than 4 reasons to hire a professional wedding MC, but these are the ones that stand out and I wanted to highlight. And look, besides budget I totally get why some couples do choose to have a family member or friend host the night, they want to keep it personal, especially for a small and intimate celebration. But the truth is if you source the right wedding MC, he or she will gel instantly with your family and friends, being personable is a stand out trait of a good wedding MC.
